Move. Listen. Connect. Explore.

PULSE is a recurring Contact Improvisation practice held at Ashtanga Yoga Victoria, offering a welcoming space to explore movement, creativity, and connection through guided practice and open dance.

Each evening begins with a facilitated class and warm-up before opening into a Contact Improvisation Jam accompanied by a thoughtfully curated musical soundscape. Whether you’re completely new to Contact Improvisation or have years of experience, PULSE offers an opportunity to deepen your awareness, expand your movement vocabulary, and connect with others through curiosity and play.

What is Contact Improvisation?

Contact Improvisation is a movement practice rooted in listening, responsiveness, and shared exploration. Rather than learning choreography, participants discover movement together through touch, weight-sharing, momentum, balance, and improvisation.

Every dance is unique. Some moments are playful, others quiet and meditative, all inviting greater presence, creativity, and embodied awareness. No dance experience is necessary just a willingness to explore.

What to Expect

Each PULSE evening follows a simple format:

7:00 PM – Guided Class & Warm-Up
A facilitated class introduces principles and themes of Contact Improvisation, creating an accessible space for beginners while offering experienced movers fresh avenues for exploration.

7:30 PM – Contact Jam
The space opens into an improvised movement jam accompanied by music. Participants are invited to move solo, in duets, or with others as the dance naturally unfolds.

9:00 PM – Closing Circle
The evening concludes with a shared moment of stillness, silence, and a brief closing circle.

A Welcoming, Consent-Centred Space

PULSE is grounded in respect, curiosity, consent, and personal agency. Participants are encouraged to move at their own pace, honour their boundaries, communicate clearly, and support a culture of care for themselves and one another. Whether you spend the evening dancing continuously or simply observing and joining when it feels right, your experience is welcome.
